Computers in our public computer area feature access to our premium databases as well as general Internet access and Microsoft Office products. We recommend using our Databases that provide accurate, reliable information for homework help and researching investments, genealogy and other interests. Computers require your library card for logging in. For more information see FAQs for Computer Use.

FAQs for Computer Use:

1. How do I sign up?

Our computers use an automated system with your library barcode number as your login. Any Ohio resident with proper ID may register for a Rocky River library card. There are two 15-minute express terminals available that do not require a library card.

2. How do I reserve a computer?

Our automated system will automatically assign you the next available computer when you scan your library barcode. You may also make a same day reservation via telephone by calling 440.333.7610 x283. Please have your library card number ready.

3. Can I get an email account on your computers?

The library does not provide email accounts, but you may sign up for a free account through providers such as Yahoo or Hotmail.

4. How long can I use a computer?

The normal login time is one hour. If no one else is waiting, you may stay on for a maximum of three hours per day. The system also limits you to three logins per day.

5. What software do you have on the computers?

We have Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2000. Adobe Acrobat Reader, Macromedia Flash Player, Shockwave, QuickTime and Real Player are enabled to view websites.

6. How do I print from your computers?

Free black and white printing is limited to 10 pages per person per day. Additional black and white pages are 10 cents each. All color prints are 25 cents each.

7. Can I participate in online classes on your computers?

We suggest that you check first since we cannot guarantee that you will have the proper permissions to use the school’s website or the required time on a regular basis. Some classes require that chat features be enabled, which is not permitted. Also, we cannot guarantee a reservation at a special time on a regular basis for you to complete a class session.

8. How can I save my work?

We do not allow anything to be downloaded or saved to the hard drive. All files must be saved to a disk. Extra disks are sold at the reference desk. At present time, we do not have the capability for you to use CD-R, CD-RW disks or USB devices to save your work.

If you are interested in learning more about specific computer applications, our Technology Training staff will be happy to assist you. For more information, please see the Training Services webpage or call the department at 440.333.7610 ext. 3754.
