The Schlathers owned a large Rocky River estate at 2185 Wooster Road,
overlooking the Rocky River, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During
this time they also traveled abroad and purchased many fine artworks and
furnishings. Mr. Schlather died in 1918, but Mrs. Schlather survived him by
many years. In 1954, she bequeathed $100,000 to the library in honor of her
husband. This gift funded the Library’s first major expansion that was
completed in June 1956, five months after Mrs. Schlather’s death. Many of the
couple’s art works and furnishings were donated to the Library, including this
landscape painting of the province of Württemberg, Germany, where Leonard
Schlather spent his childhood, before immigrating to Cleveland in 1852.
