Description:

Since it is a free-standing piece hanging on a wall, Egyptian Maidens is included in this guide, even though it is actually part of the Cowan Pottery Museum. A display case directly across from this tile mural introduces the visitor to Cowan Pottery and the concept of a library/museum. A limited edition of five, the Egyptian Maidens tile mural measures 2.5 feet wide by 4.0 feet high. It is the only piece created by Mrs. Shaw for the Cowan Pottery Studio. Primarily she was a mural painter, and the most well known example of her work is the series of ancient instrument mural paintings in the Grand Foyer of Severance Hall, the home of The Cleveland Orchestra. Both the Severance murals and the Cowan tile mural were created in 1930. Elsa Vick Shaw’s husband, Glen Shaw, was also a muralist and among his works is the large Freedoms Mural in the lobby of the Don Umerley Civic Center on the Rocky River City Hall campus.
