DESCRIPTION:

This tin lithograph is actually a side panel from one of the Schlather Brewery‘s delivery trucks. This brewery stood at 1903 W. 28th Street in Ohio City on the near West Side of Cleveland. It existed from 1857 - 1902. Today it is the site of the popular restaurant, Great Lakes Brewing Co. The Schlathers had an elegant home on Wooster Road overlooking the Rocky River. Shortly after Mr. Schlather sold his brewery, he and Mrs. Schlather took an extended world tour during which they acquired many of the fine arts objects that eventually Mrs. Schlather donated to Rocky River Public Library. In 1954, 36 years following the death of Leonard Schlather, Mrs. Schlather gave a $100,000 bequest to the Library in memory of her husband for the purpose of expanding the library. It was the nation’s largest individual gift to a public library up to that time.
